RULING ON SMOKING AND CHEWING TOBACCO.

Question:
Is smooking permitted in islam? And is chewing of tobacco permitted in islam.

Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.
Smoking is haraam, because it is evil and because it causes a great deal of harm.
Allaah has permitted to His slaves only good kinds of food and drink, and He has forbidden the bad kinds.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“he allows them as lawful At Tayyibaat (i.e. all good and lawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods),
and prohibits them as unlawful Al Khabaa’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods)”
[Noble Quran- Surah al-A’raaf 7:157]

All forms of smoking are kinds of khabaa’ith (evil and unlawful things),
and they include harmful and intoxicating substances.

It is haraam to deal with it in any way, whether one inhales it,chews it or deals with it in any of its other forms.
It is obligatory upon every Muslim to give up these things and to hasten to repent to Allaah,
and to regret having committed this sin,and to resolve never to go back to it.

May Allaah help us and you to do all that is good.

THE REASON WHY SMOKING IS HARAAM :

Question:
why is smoking haram?

Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.
Perhaps you know that all nations of the world – Muslim and kaafir alike –
have now started to fight smoking, because they know that it is very harmful.

Islam forbids everything that is harmful, because the Prophet(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)said:
“There should be no harming or reciprocating harm.”

Undoubtedly there are foods and drinks which are beneficial and good, and others which are harmful and bad.
Allaah described our Prophet(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in the following terms
(interpretation of the meaning):

“he allows them as lawful At Tayyibaat (i.e. all good and lawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods),
and prohibits them as unlawful Al Khabaa’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods)
[Noble Quran- Surah al-A’raaf 7:157]

Is smoking one of the good and lawful things (al-tayyibaat) or one of the evil and unlawful things (al-khabaa’ith)?

Secondly: it was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Allaah forbids you to trade gossip,to ask too many questions and to waste money.”

And Allaah forbade wasteful extravagance when He said (interpretation of the meaning):
“and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allaah) likes not Al Musrifoon
(those who waste by extravagance) [Noble Quran- Surah al-A’raaf 7:31]

And He described the slaves of the Most Merciful as follows (interpretation of the meaning):
“And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes)”
[Noble Quran-Surah al-Furqaan 25:67]

The whole world now knows that the money spent on smoking is to be considered as money wasted,
from which no benefit is gained;indeed,it is money spent on something harmful.
If the money which is spent on smoking worldwide were to be collected,
it could have saved entire populations who have died of starvation.

Is there anyone more foolish that one who holds a dollar bill and sets fire to it?
What is the difference between him and the one who smokes?
Indeed, the smoker is more foolish, because the folly of the one who burns a dollar bill ends there,
whilst the one who smokes burns his money and also harms his body.

Thirdly: how many disasters have been caused by smoking, because of cigarette butts which are thrown away and cause fires.
Other disasters have been caused in other ways,as when a house was burned down with its occupants inside
when a man lit his cigarette when there was a gas leak.

Fourthly: how many people are offended by the smell of smokers,
especially when you are unfortunate enough to have one of them standing next to you in the mosque.
Probably any nasty smell is easier to bear than the smell of the smoker’s mouth when he has just woken up.
It is amazing how many women can put up with the smell of their husbands’ mouths!

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade those who had eaten garlic or onions from
coming to the mosque so that they would not offend their fellow-worshippers with their smell.
The smell of onions and garlic is easier to bear than the smell of the smoker and his mouth.

These are some of the reasons why smoking is haraam.

RULING ON SMOKING:

Question:
Is smoking cigarettes Haraam?

Answer:
Praise be to Allah and peace and blessings be on His Prophet (SAL).
Smoking is one of the things which has caused a lot of problems and harm these days and it has spread like wild fire.
Before we discuss this topic in detail,we should know that Allaah the Almighty has
divided things in the world into two types,
good or permissible (al-tayyibaat, al-halaal) and evil or prohibited (al-khabaa'ith, al-haraam),and there is no third type.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning) in Noble Quran surat al-A'raaf (7:157):
"And He makes good things halaal for them and bad things haraam."

Considering this fact, smoking can either be permissible and good or prohibited and evil.

Thus, we present some of its characteristics and let the person asking the question see himself in which type lies smoking.

1. There is no disagreement among the physicians and sane people that smoking is harmful for health.
It is one of the major causes of lung cancer and other diseases.
It is also one of the major causes of death.

Since, it is known that the Islamic law prohibits everything that is harmful for a human being.

Allah said (interpretation of meaning):
"Do not kill yourself. Allah is Merciful unto you." (Noble Quran Surat al-Nisaa' 4:29)

In addition, His Prophet SAWS (peace be upon him) said:
"There is no harm or causing of harm (in Islaam)." (Arabic "laa darar wa laa diraar")

He SAWS (peace be upon him) also said:
"A person will not be able to move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about ... his body as to what he engaged it in."

Smoking also goes against the saying of the Prophet SAWS:
"Your body has a right on you."

2. There is no disagreement among the physicians and sane people that smoking is harmful for the health of others
who inhale the polluted breath of the smoker.
Medical research has proven the harmful effects of smoking mothers on their children.

3. The offensive smell caused by smoking is a source of pain to the worshippers of Allah among humans.

Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):
"Those who cause harm to believing men and women without any reason do a great sin." (Surat al-Ahzaab, 33:58)

4. The money that is spent on cigarettes is used on buying a harmful thing and is therefore an extravagance.

Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):
"… and do not be extravagant wasters. Those who are extravagant are kinsmen of Satan."
(Noble Quran- Surat al-Israa' 17:26-27)

Extravagance (in Islam) means spending on something haraam.

Spending money on cigarettes is a waste of resources as well.

The Prophet SAWS (peace be upon him) said:
"A person will not be able to move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about .....
what he owned as to how he spent it."

Considering all that has been presented,it can be clearly seen that smoking is an evil among many others.

It is not permissible to indulge in it,or buy and sell it,or even to offer it to others.

It is incumbent on a person who is addicted to it that he must make all efforts
and get whatever necessary treatment to stop it.

If the unbelievers have understood the harm caused by smoking and made laws regarding it,
the Muslims should be even more eager to stop it and treat those who are addicted to it.

We ask Allah the Almighty to cure everyone indulging in this evil and help him in giving it up.

Allah is the Best Guide to the Right Path.

Islam Q&A
Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid

IS SMOKING PERMITTED IN ISLAM?

Most Muslims are aware of and try to avoid the major sins in Islam - murder, suicide, adultery, alcohol, gambling, usury, etc.
Muslims are forbidden to harm themselves or others.
Yet millions of Muslims all over the world are doing just that -harming, even killing themselves and their families.
Islamic scholars have historically had mixed views about tobacco, and until recently,
cigarette smoking has not been unanimously forbidden or even discouraged

The mixed views on the subject came about because cigarettes are a more recent invention
and did not exist at the time of the revelation of the Qur'an in the 7th century A.D.

Therefore, one cannot find a verse of Qur'an or words of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
saying clearly that "Cigarette smoking is forbidden."
However, there are many instances where the Qur'an gives us general guidelines,
and calls upon us to use our reason and intelligence, and seek guidance from Allah about what is right and wrong.
In the Qur'an, Allah says, “...he [the Prophet] commands them what is just,and forbids them what is evil;
he allows them as lawful what is good, and prohibits them from what is bad..." (Noble Quran-Surah al-Ar’af 7:157).
So what are the evils of tobacco use, for your health and for your deen (religion)?

1. Danger to your health

Allah says, "...make not your own hands contribute to your destruction..." (NOble Quran -Surah al-Baqarah 2:195);
"...nor kill yourselves..." (Noble Quran-Surah al-Nisaa 4:29).
It is universally understood that cigarette smoking causes a number of health problems
that often ultimately result in death.
Men who smoke contract lung cancer at 22 times the rate of non-smokers.
Smokers are also highly at risk for heart disease, emphysema, oral cancer, stroke, etc.
There are hundreds of poisonous and toxic ingredients in the cigarette itself
that the smoker inhales straight into the lungs.

In an authentic hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that
"Whomsoever drinks poison, thereby killing himself, will sip this poison forever and ever in the fire of Jahannum (Hell)."
Over 3 million people worldwide die from smoking-related causes each year.

2. Danger to your family's health

In the Noble Qur'an, Allah says:
"Those who annoy believing men and women undeservedly bear on themselves a glaring sin"
(Surat al-Ahzaab 33:58).

And the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that "there should be neither harming, nor reciprocating harm.”

In another hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should not hurt his neighbor."
Those around the smoker inhale what is known as "second-hand smoke" -
the unfiltered, poisonous waste that goes in the air around the smoker.

There are over 4,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke, over 40 of which are known to cause cancer.
Second-hand smoke causes or aggravates asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory problems, especially in children.

3. Addictive

The addiction to tobacco is a physical response that often interferes with one's life and worship.
For example, smoking is clearly forbidden during the daytime fast of Ramadan.
Many addicted smokers spend their fasting days sleeping, cranky, and short-tempered,
just counting the hours until they can have their fix at sunset.
The most severely addicted will wait outside the mosque door for the adhan, and break their fast by lighting up,
before taking even food or water.

4. Noxious Smell

Muslims are advised to refrain from eating raw onions and garlic-
simply as a courtesy to those around them because of the awful smell.

The same goes even more so for the reek of cigarettes, which permeates everything around the smoker
-hair,clothing,home,car, etc.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:“Whoever has eaten from such greens as garlic,
onions or leek should keep away from our mosque.”

Many smokers try to hide the smell by using breath mints or perfume.
This does not get rid of the smell,it only masks it.

Often the combination of smells is even more nauseating.

5. Waste of Money

Allah says, "...But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift.
Verily spendthrifts are brothers of the devils...” {Noble Quran-Surah al-Israa’ 17:26-27}

And in an authentic hadith the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that:
"Allah hates for you three things: gossiping, begging, and wasting money."

In the U.S. and other countries, cigarettes are taxed heavily in order to discourage this habit
and reimburse the government for the overwhelming health care costs to care
for those afflicted with diseases caused by smoking.

Smokers often spend thousands of dollars a year that literally just go up in smoke.

Recent Opinions of Scholars

In more recent times, as these dangers of tobacco use have come to be proven beyond any doubt,
scholars have become more unanimous in pronouncing tobacco use clearly haram (forbidden) to believers.

They now use the strongest terms to condemn this habit.

For example: "In view of the harm caused by tobacco, growing, trading in and smoking of tobacco
are judged to be haram (forbidden).

The Prophet, peace be upon him, is reported to have said, 'Do not harm yourselves or others.'

Furthermore, tobacco is unwholesome, and God says in the Qur'an that the Prophet, peace be upon him,
'enjoins upon them that which is good and pure, and forbids them that which is unwholesome'"
(Permanent Committee of Academic Research and Fatwa, Saudi Arabia).

How to Quit?

As mentioned, one of the dangers of tobacco is that it is so addicting.
It causes a physical response in your body when you try to give it up.
Therefore, quitting is often difficult.

However, with the help of Allah and the personal commitment to improve yourself for the sake of Allah
and for your own health, it is possible.

It is first recommended to make the firm intention, from deep in your heart to give up this evil habit.

Trust in Allah's words: "...When you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah.
For Allah loves those who put their trust in Him.If Allah help you,none can overcome you;
if He forsakes you, who is - after that - that can help you?
In Allah, then, let believers put their trust" (Noble Quran- Surah Al-'lmran 3:159-160).

Secondly, one must avoid situations where you are used to smoking, and people who do so around you.

For example,if you have certain friends who gather together to smoke,
make a choice to stay away from that environment for the time being.

At a vulnerable stage,it is too easy to get sucked back in by having "just one."
Remember, tobacco causes a physical addiction and you must stay away completely.

Drink a lot of water and keep yourself busy in other endeavors.
Spend time in the mosque. Play sports.

And remember the words of Allah: "And those who strive hard in Our Cause,We will certainly guide them to Our Paths,
for verily Allah is with those who do right” (Noble Quran-Surah al-Ankabut 29:69).

Living With a Smoker

If you live with or are friends with smokers, first of all encourage them to quit, for the sake of Allah, their deen,
and their health.

If they refuse (and ultimately we will face Allah alone),
you have the right to protect your own health and the health of your family.
Do not allow it in the house.
Do not allow it in enclosed quarters with your family.
Even if the smoker is a parent,we do not need to permit them to smoke merely because they are our parents or elders.

The Qur'an is clear that we are not to obey our parents in things which are forbidden by Allah.
Share with your loved ones the information above, and encourage them to give up this habit, for the sake of Allah.

Introduction

Discovery Of Tobacco

Tobacco was discovered by the Spanish sailors on the American shores at about 1500 CE (900 AH). Since its discovery, the epidemic of smoking has continued to spread all over the world. In our times, one seldom finds a house not afflicted by it.

As early as the Seventeenth Century, the European countries realized the dangers of smoking and fought against it Laws were ordained in England, Russia, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, and other countries, prohibiting smoking and punishing violators.

Nowadays, the Western countries continue their attempts to protect their peoples from the harms of smoking. They employ media means, ordain laws and regulations, and apply other methods to discourage people from smoking. Because of that, the rate of smokers has declined to a certain degree in those countries.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Smoking Among Muslims

Smoking was introduced to the Muslim countries by the Europeans around 1000 AH. Its spread among the Muslims was similar to that in the West. The unfortunate fact, however, is that in the Muslim countries, no similar measures were exerted to protect the people from it. To the contrary, the media continues to adom smoking and encourage people to do it. This caused the epidemic of smoking to continue to spread in those countries to such an extent that it has become hard to control.

Smoking has become the rule, and abstaining from it the exception. Often, people look with astonishment and disdain at a person who when a cigarette is offered to him, declines to smoke explaining that he does not smoke.

Offering cigaretles to the guests has become among the first rules of hospitality. Anyone who does not offer them to his guests or insist on them to smoke would be violating the ethics of hospitality and generosity!
Furthermore, some of those who pretend to represent the Deen are among the worst addicts to smoking. When they are reproached or reminded of their vice, they respond by providing weak excuses to justify it in the name of Islaam. They slyly remark that there is no clear text prohibiting smoking. Therefore, they conclude, smoking is not prohibited, but is only makruh (disliked). By this, they provide a poor excuse for the ignorant, and establish a very bad example for others.

Many Muslims have been influenced by such statements, falling into the snares of addiction to smoking. This is observed all over the world. A striking example is that all American airlines now prohibit smoking, even on most international flights; on the other hand, for Muslim airlines, one travels in a near-suffocation state, even on short trips, because of the high number of smokers.

Thus, it becomes incumbent to write an article which provides evidence concerning the ruling of smoking in Islam. We hope that this will benefit our Muslim brothers and sisters; and we ask Allah (T) to accept it from us as a sincere deed for His pleasure.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Definition

Smoking refers to the action of lighting a cigarette, a pipe, a cigar, a water pipe, or any other object made from tobacco or materials of similar effects. The object is then sucked on with the lips to extract smoke. This smoke is inhaled into the chest and then exhaled from the nose and mouth as a thick white smoke. "Smoking" is now used to refer to the action of producing this smoke in English, Arabic, and other languages.

Evidence for the Prohibition of Smoking

There are many reasons, any one of which aufficient to rule smoking prohibited. Most importantly, it is harmful in numerous ways. It is harmful to the Deen, health, environment, family, brotherhood and social relations, property, etc. The following sections will briefly outline some of its harms and evils.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Haram To The Deen

Smoking spoils a person's acts of worship and reduces their rewards. For instance, it spoils the prayer, which is the pillar of Deen. Allah's Messenger said: Whoever eats garlic or onion, let him avoid us and our masjid, and stay in his home. The angels are surely hurt by things that hurt the human beings(1)

Those with clean and undefiled fitrah (nature) have no doubt that the smell emanating from the mouth of a smoker is worse and more foul than that from the mouth of one who ate garlic or onion. Thus, a smoker is in between two options, either to harm the praying people and the angels with his foul smell, or miss the prayer in jama'ah.

Smoking also spoils fasting. Fasting is very hard for the smoker. As soon as the day is over, he hastens to break his fast on an evil cigarette instead of sweet dates or pure water. Even if he fasts through the month Ramadan, a smoker is reluctant to fast on other days. Thus he loses the great reward of those who fast even one day in Allah's way.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Harm To The Human Body

No one can deny the harm of smoking to the human body. The medical evidence for this is well established and overwhelming. Because of this, the law in the United States and many other countries requires including a warning on any smoking advertisement.

Smoking contains poisonous materials, such as nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, arsenic, benzopyrene, etc., that the smoker swallows in small proportions. Their harm accumulates with time to result in a gradual killing of the human organs and tissues.

The hazards of smoking to the health are hard to enumerate. Cancer, tuberculosis, heart attacks, asthma, coughing, premature birth, infertility, infections in the digestive system, high blood pressure, nervousness, mouth and teeth diseases, etc., are among the many health hazards that have been strongly linked to smoking.

These diseases may not appear all at once, however a smoker is most likely to suffer from some of them, and his suffering increases as he grows older. Furthermore, statistics have established that smokers' age is, on the average, ten years less than other people's.

This is aufficient to prohibit smoking. Islam prohibits any action that causes harm to oneself or to other people. Allah (T) says (what means):

Do not kill yourselves, Allah is indeed merciful to you (2)

Do not cast yourselves, with your own hands, into destruction. (3)

And the Messenger says: No harm may be inflicted on oneself or others.(4)

The feet of a human being will not depart, on the day of Judgement, from his standing before his Lord, until he is questioned about five things: his lifetime - how did he pass it, his youth - how did he used it, his wealth - where did he earn it and how did he spend it, and how did he follow what he knew.(5)

Whoever consumes poison, killing himself with it, then he will he consuming his poison in the hellfire, and he will abide in it permanently and eternally.(6)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Harm To The Mind and Will Power

Smoking is harmful to the human mind and reason. An obvious demonstration of this is that one who is addicted to it passes through periods of severe craving, making it hard for him to think, concentrate, solve a problem, or do any important matter, until he smokes.

When one smokes, his muscles slacken, and he passes through a brief period of delirium that curtains the thought. His digestive system is also affected, causing him frequent nervousness and trembling of the hands. He passes through periods of excitability, in itation, and insomnia.

Thus, instead of being Allah's slave, a smoker becomes slave to his cigarette. He develops a weaker control of his sense and reason. The faculty of reason, clear and unobstructed, is one of Allah's great bounties on people. Allah (T) praised it in numerous places of the Qur'an; and He called on people to use it to see the truth and obey Him in a better way. Allah wants of the believer to be strong and capable of controlling the reigns of his desires. He (T) said (what means):

AIIah (T) wants to let you into His mercy, whereas those who follow the desires want you to drift far away (from the right path).(7)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Harm To The Environment

A smoker emits his poisons in the faces of his companions, wife, children, and the environment. It is well established that second-hand smoke is almost as dangerous as first-hand. Thus, whether they like it or not, a smoker's associates are forced to inhale the smoke and be themselves smokers as well.

In addition to the poisons normally carried in the smoke, if a smoker has an contagious disease, such as tuberculosis or influenza, his exhaled smoke and coughing carry the disease to those around him.

Furthermore, a smoker irritates people by the foul smell and poisonous nature of his smoking. If they suffer from asthma or allergies, they are forced to move away from his vicinity. The Prophet (pbuh) said: Anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day should not hurt his neighbor. (8)

Thus, smoking constitutes a definite harm to other people; this is prohibited, as was indicated in the hadith cited earlier.

Also, a smoker is certainly a bad companion to sit with, as is depicted in the following hadith:

Verily, the example of a good companion and a bad one is like that of a perfume merchant and a blacksmith: As for the perfume merchant, he would either grant you (some perfume), or you would buy (some perfume) from him, or (in the least) you would get a good smell from him. And as for the blower of the bellows (ironsmith), you would either get a foul odor from him, or he would burn your clothes. (9)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harm To The Property

A smoker wastes his wealth on that which harms and has no benefit; he will be asked about his wealth and how he spent it, as has been cited in the hadith earlier. His wealth belongs to Allah, so how would he dare to waste it in disobedience to Him? Allah (T) says (what means):

And do not entrust to the imprudent ones the possessions that Allah has placed in your charge.. (10)

And do not waste (your resources) extravagantly. Indeed the squanderers are the brethren of the devils (11)

And the Prophet (pbuh) said: Allah hates for you three things: gossiping, begging, and wasting money.(12)

Furthermore, there are numerous cases of burnt carpets, furniture, and even complete houses and establishments that have resulted from this disastrous vice.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moral Decadence

Smoking is a form of moral decadence. It is most spread among the low-class immoral people. It reflects blind imitation of the non-Muslims. It is mostly consumed in bars, discos, casinos, and other: places of sin. A smoker may beg or steal if he does not have the money to buy cigarettes. He is ill-mannered with his friends and family, especially when he misses taking his necessary "dose" at the usual time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Evil Substance

Smoking involves the consumption of an evil substance (khabeeth). It has a foul smell, foul taste, and is harmful to the body. This is aufficient to: prohibit it, because Allah (T) says (what means):
(The Prophet) who will enjoin upon them the doing of what is right, forbid them the doing of what is wrong, make lawful to them the good things of life, prohibit for them the evil things, and lift from them their burdens and the shackles that were (previously) upon them.(13)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Resembling The People Of The Fire

A smoker inhales the smoke that does not give him any nourishment. This is similar to the action of the people of the Hell fire who eat harmful thorny plants:

No food will be there for them but a poisonous thorny plant, which will neither nourish them nor still their hunger. (14)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bad Example

A smoker, whether he likes it or not, makes of himself an example for his children and others to follow. He leads them to commit this evil. Actions sometimes have a stronger effect than words. Thus, even if he advises them or forbids them from smoking, his partaking of it provides them with a strong excuse to do it.

The problem is worse when the smoker is of known piety or knowledge. In such case, his harm becomes more emphasized, because more people take him as guide and example, and are thus lead astray by him. This multiplies his sins and increases his burden.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hostility Toward The Good People

The majority of good people avoid smoking and stay away from smokers. Therefore, a smoker would be forced to stay away from them - at least while he smokes. He puts himself in a selective exile, creating a spiritual distance and hostility between him and the good people, and a closeness to the evil people. The effects of this become more apparent and acute with time. Note that this applies equally to any sin that a person commits, small or large.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Low Self Esteem.

A smoker despises himself, because he feels that a little cigarette is controlling him. Realizing his weakness before desires, this creates in him a feeling of defeat in the face of hardships.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scholars' Verdict

Since smoking became known to Muslims, all of the great scholars who have the capability of Ijtihad (deriving verdicts in new situations) agree to its prohibition. Thus, there is no value for baseless opinions, conflicting with this, provided by self-proclaimed lesser scholars.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Warnings

In discussing the subject of the prohibition of smoking, there are some important warnings that need to be mentioned:

As indicated before, the prohibition of smoking is not restricted to cigarettes, but applies as well to other objects that have similar effects such as cigars, pipes, water-pipes, chewing tobacco or sniffing tobacco, etc.
The reasons mentioned above for prohibiting smoking apply as well, and more strongly, to various types of drugs and hashish such as marijuana and -tat. These materials have additional problems such as causing drunkenness, death, madness, etc.
The prohibition of smoking is not restricted to consuming it, but applies as well to offering it to people, sitting with those who are smoking, or selling it. All of this involves helping people commit sins, which is prohibited, as Allah (T) says (what means):

Help one another in righteousness and piety, and do not help one another in sinning and transgression. And fear and revere Allah; verily, Allah is severe in punishment.
(15)

Also, Allah's Messenger (pbuh) said: Indeed when Allah prohibits something, he prohibits eating its price.(16)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Treating the Disease of Smoking

Only few of those addicted to smoking are able to stop it. The reasons for this are many, among which are the following:

The addictive nature of the poisonous substances contained in it.
The smokers are not totally convinced of its prohibition.
They do not have a strong determination to refrain from it.

The following are some suggestions to help a person stop smoking:

Rely on Allah sincerely, with full determination not to return to smoking, in compliance with Allah's command:

When you decide on a certain course of action, place your trust in Allah.
(17)

Stop immediately instead of claiming it is best to do it gradually. The gradual approach is the way of one who does not trust his determination and the will power that Allah has granted him. Let the example be taken from the Sahabah who, as soon as Allah's command reached them regarding alcohols:

Will you not then desist?(18)

they immediately poured out all the alcohol that they had and said, "We desist our Lord, we desist!" They did this despite the fact that alcohol has a greater addictive power over those who drink it.

Avoid the bad company of smokers and smoking environments that are full with the smell of smoke.

Change the food diet by abstaining from foods and drinks that would entice the craving to smoke such as spices, meat, tea, and coffee; and eating a lot of vegetables and fruits.

Use medically tested and established procedures to help stop smoking, as directed by physicians, such as nicotine patches, nicotine gum, etc.

Expel the secret whispers of Satan who continuously dictates to the human being that he is weak and incapable of refraining from sinning, as Allah (T) says (what means)

It is but Satan who instills (into you) fear of his allies; so do not fear them, but fear Me if you are (truly) believers.(19)

Fight then against the allies of Satan; indeed, Satan's guile is weak.(20)

The author holds the unique distinction and honor to be the first Muslim Scholar in the world to declare Smoking is Haram.
He did with full conviction and courage.
Twenty years later the Ulama have realized the truth and every Muslim country in the world is following suit
by declaring Smoking is Haram.)

SUMMARY

Cigarette smoking is the most widespread example of drug dependence in the United States and in all the Islamic countries
as well. The U.S. Surgeon General's Office considers cigarette smoking to America's worst drug addiction problem.
Medical investigations show that cigarette smoking is a major factor in the development of
many cases of cancer, heart trouble, chronic lung and respiratory disease and other ailments.

Smoking causes more illness and death than all other drugs.
Cigarette smoking in pregnant women results in deleterious health effects on their newborn children.
These Findings and the revelations in the Holy Qur'an clearly prohibit smoking of tobacco by Muslims.
Hence smoking is unlawful in Islam.

SMOKING AND HEALTH EFFECTS:

It is very well known that cigarette smoking is the most widespread example of drug dependence in the United States.
A pamphlet released by the U.S. Surgeon General's Office entitled "Why People Smoke Cigarettes"
calls cigarette smoking America's worst drug addiction problem.
It involves addiction to the drug nicotine in tobacco and possible other tobacco substances.

An authoritative British report (1) stated that tobacco smoking is a form of drug dependence different from
but no less strong than that of other addictive drugs— the most stable and well-adjusted person will,if he smokes at all,
almost inevitably become dependent on the habit.

An Australian government report of 1977 called Drug Problems in Australia -An Intoxicated Society (2), says,
"It is important to recognize that smoking is a form of drug dependence, but one with especially insidious characteristics."

Like many other drugs, the chemicals in cigarette affect the chemistry of the brain and nervous system
and create dependence and lead to compulsive use.

More than 56 million Americans and multiple scores of millions more in other nations,
including Islamic nations (3) are hooked on cigarettes in the same way as caffeine addicts are hooked on caffeine.

A major reason why sales continue at high levels despite widespread public knowledge about the health hazards
is the addictive nature of cigarettes.

Most people start smoking just to conform to peer or social pressures.
They get a feeling of "grown up." They find smoking (nicotine) at first acts as a stimulant.
Later they find they need to smoke as a tranquilizer.
These smokers develop a level of tolerance and bodily adjustment to nicotine.
If this level of nicotine is not maintained in their blood,
they will experience uncomfortable physical-psychological dependence problems.

These uncomfortable feelings are classic drug withdrawal symptoms.
Addictive drugs are psychoactive which create brain and nervous system dependence and lead to compulsive use.

Abrupt discontinuation leads to physiological and psychological distress.
The withdrawal symptoms are headache, stomach discomfort, nervousness, irritability, sweating,
change in heart and blood pressure and lower excretion of some hormones affecting the nervous system (4).

The former U.S. Surgeon General, C. Everett Coop, says,

"Cigarette smoking is clearly identified as the chief preventable cause of death (340,000 deaths per year in U.S.A.).
In our society it is a major factor in the development of many cases of cancer, heart trouble,
chronic lung and respiratory diseases and other ailments.
Smoking causes more illnesses and death than all the other drugs."(5)

SMOKING AND ISLAM:

In Islam cleanliness and hygiene are emphasized to the extent that it has been considered a part of Iman (faith).

It is very well known that a smoker's mouth is unclean and foul smelling "like a cigarette ash-tray."

Allah (SWT) says: "And forbids them what is bad." The Qur'an, Surah Al-'Araf, 7: 157

"0 ye who believe! Intoxicants and gambling are an abomination of Satan's handiwork.
Eschew such abominations that ye may prosper."
Al Ma'idah, 5: 93

The word intoxicant has three meanings (6):
(1) To induce, especially the effect of ingested alcohol.
(2) To stimulate or excite.
(3) To poison.

Except the first meaning the latter two are very well valid and both applicable to nicotine and caffeine.

Smoking is nothing but a form of slow suicide.

The Noble Qur'an says:

"And slay not the life which Allah hath forbidden..." Surah, Al-Isra, 17: 33

"And make not your own hands contribute to your destruction." Surah, Al-Baqara, 2: 195

"Nor kill or destroy yourselves for verily Allah hath been to you most Merciful." Surah,An-Nisa, 4: 29

The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) has said:
"Nor be hurt or injure others."

It is scientifically proven that the exhaled smoke of the smoker is hazardous to non-smokers around him.

The amount of money a smoker spends on cigarette smoking in a period of 30 years
is calculated to be Two Hundred Thousand Dollars or more.
All this money is simply wasted (not including the money spent on smoker's health care).

Allah (SWT) says:
"But squander not your wealth in the manner of a spend thrift, verily spendthrifts are brothers of evils."
Noble Quran-Surah, Al-Isra, 17: 26, 27

Body is polluted by smoking.Hence smokers cannot pray until they have cleansed themselves.

According to the Noble Qur'an:
"0 ye who believe! Draw not near unto prayer when you are drunken, till ye know that which ye utter,
nor when you are polluted save when journeying upon the road, till you have bathed."
Surah, An-Nisa, 4: 43

The Christians consider the human body to be a sacred trust given to man by God
because it contains the spirit breathed into it by God.

Even the Qur'an says
"So,when I have made him and have breathed unto him of My spirit,
do ye fall down, prostrating yourselves unto him "
Surah, Al-Hijr, 15: 29.

Hence the physical body should not be polluted or injured or destroyed in any way by smoking or taking of alcohol
or any type of habit-forming drugs.

C 0 N C L U S I O N:

For the foregoing reasons and for reasons considered elsewhere smoking is Haram or unlawful in Islam,
hence smoking should be discouraged and finally banned in all Islamic countries.

All smoking Muslims should give up this unhealthy and un-Islamic activity.

The best way to give it up is to stop all smoking completely.
Tapering off on the amount one smokes does not work for most people.

It is not easy to quit suddenly, but it is presently the most successful way.
There are many ways and techniques available for a serious minded person to give up smoking,
which cannot be discussed here.

For the Muslims who sincerely practice Islam and who submit themselves to the Will of Allah,
this should not be a difficult task.

SMOKING IS HARAM

Muhammad Afifi
It is evident beyond doubt that smoking is injurious to health.
Allah says in the Qur'an:
"And make not your own hands contribute to your destruction"(2:195).

Muslim scholars in the past differed in opinion regarding smoking because of lack of evidence
relating cigarette smoking to disease.

Those who considered Makruh (a hated act) regarded this lack of evidence.

But since 30 years ago the evidence clearly demonstrates that smoking is injurious to health.
The majority of scholars have clearly stated that smoking is Haram.

Quotes from some scholars:
Shaykh Abu Bakr Jabir al-Jazairi a Professor in Islamic University of Madinah and a famous teacher in Masjid an-Nabawi
has clearly explained the 'Hukm' of smoking derived from the Qur'an and the Sunnah:
"Anything that harms the human body is Haram"

"The consensus (Ijma') of Ulama',prohibits the act of destroying property unnecessarily
or using it not for the path of Shara' as in the case of smoking"

"Bringing harm to others is Harâm and so does smoking"

"It is clear that Sharia' condemns smoking as a disgraceful and damaging act.
Smoking is an act of sin and it is wrong for it is Haram and it is Wajib to abstain from it."

Ibn Hajr in his 'Fath al-Mubin' gave 2 points why smoking is Haram in Islam:
The act leads to harmful effects, whether noticed or unseen.
It will cause the body to suffer.

The Prophet (s.a.w.) said:
"Do not hurt yourselves nor injure others." (Ahmad & Ibn Majah)

Shaykh Muhammad al-'Aini states in "Fatwa Shraba ad-Dukhan"(8-10),
that smoking is prohibited due to these 4 'Usul' (principles):

-Indulging in anything that causes harm to your health is Harâm.

-The bad smell which smoking produces disturbs others.

-Smoking can be addictive & wasteful and from these reasons alone it can be considered Harâm already,
based on the ruling from the principles of Shari'ah' and rational (Ma'qul).

Shaykh Mahmuud Syaltuut, a former Dean at the University of al-Azhar wrote:
"The dangers of smoking are clear.Once you quit smoking, the person becomes 'muftir'(drowsy, tired)
as explained in a Hadith from Imam Ahmad that: acts that will lead to 'muftir' are prohibited).
Furthermore, smoking is usually unpleasant to others,it leads to lung cancer and
leads to the wasting of one's property (as had been prohibited by the Prophet (s.a.w))."

Shaykh Muhammad 'Abduh a known reformer of Islam introduced the principles of:
"The security & well being of the physical health is more important than the well being of religion."
"Preventing the disease is better than treating it."

Professor Ahmad Shalabi a famous writer in Islam makes it clear that:
"Smoking will lead to diseases and this is Haram;furthermore it creates economic hardships for the family or the society
which will compromise the funding and Maslahah of the family & society."

Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradhawi a well known Da'i and scholar in Islam states:
"Muslims are not allowed to eat, drink or smoke (inhale) something which could lead to their death
whether it be instantly or over a long period of time."

"According to the methodology of the Shari'ah, smoking is prohibited."

Al-Allamah AbdurRahman Nasir as-Sa'di from his works:

"Everything which inflicts harm to the servant of Allah affecting the Deen or the body or the property without any benefit,
is definitely Harâm."

Sulayman Bujayrmi, a scholar says:
"Whatever harms the body or mind is unlawful, from which the unlawfulness of the well known tobacco is known."

Evidence relating to the prohibition of cigarette smoking are derived from the Qurân and the Sunnah,
through the methodology of Usul Fiqh with the true spirit of the Shari'ah.

Many scholars clarified this by giving Fataawa's and writings from the time of as-Shafi'i (200 H),
Ibn Taimiyyah (700 H), Hassan al-Banna (1400 H) until now.

The Prophet (s.A.w.) said: "Refrain from harming your own soul,
and follow not its whims into the disobedience of God."

Is simple smoking haram?

We all know that smoking kills. If you die because of smoking, it is a suicide. Suicide is haram in Islam.

• Smoking is harmful to the body.In Islam the body should be cared for and respected, because it is not our property.

• Also smoking becomes an addiction and is a waste of money.
Wasting money is not allowed in Islam.Spend-thrifts are Satan's brothers.

• Furthermore, smoking gives a bad smell and Muslims should always smell good especially from their mouths
because they have to offer prayer 5 times a day.

• Moreover, passive smoking also harms other people and we are not supposed to harm other people in Islam.

• Lastly, smoking numbs the senses for a while and gives you a temporary high.
This is not allowed in Islam, because the mind should always be fresh and alert.

If by simple smoking you mean common cigerettes, the you should know that
cigeretts contain tar and nicotine and other harmful things.

If you can find a way to smoke something that does not have anything harmful in it,
and does not become an addiction or give a bad smell,
or numb the senses or becomes a burden on your pocket,
or hurt anybody else, then that kind of smoking is fine I guess! - IT IS NOT POSSIBLE

The Evil of Smoking…

Smoking was discovered by the Spanish conquistadors in America,about 500 years ago;
from Spain,it spread to the rest of Europe, and thence to the Muslim world about 100 years later.

Unfortunately, while the West has long realized the dangers of smoking and attempted to reduce it,
in the Muslim lands,it has spread with little or no interference.

Early Muslim scholars, confronted with this obnoxious habit, declared it to be makrooh (detested),
comparing it with such things as garlic and onions.
This was due to the fact that, at that time, noone was aware of the harmful effects produced by smoking,
which include, cancer, heart disease, strokes, miscarriages and premature birth in women and several other diseases.

Since it has become clear that smoking is harmful,it is obligatory upon all Muslims to abstain from it,
for Allaah has said:
" And do not kill yourselves, Allaah is indeed Merciful to you ? (NOble Quran- Surah Soorah 4:29),

and the Prophet(PBUH) said:
“Let there be no harming and no reciprocating harm.” (Narrated by Ahmad).

Unfortunately, some Muslims, either deliberately,or through ignorance, have been guilty of misleading Muslims,
by repeating the earlier judgements of scholars, that smoking is only disliked, and therefore, not forbidden.

The Messenger of Allaah (pbuh) also said:

“The feet of man will not depart,on the Day of Judgement, from his standing before his Lord,
until he is asked about five things:
His lifetime and how he spent it;
his youth and how he used it;
his wealth - where he earned it and how he spent it;
and how he followed what he knew.” (Narrated by At-Tirmizi)

He(PBUH) also said:
“Whoever imbibes poison, killing himself with it,will be consuming his poison in the Hell-fire and will dwell therein
eternally.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhaari)

Smoking is also harmful to the human mind and reason.
One only has to observe a smoker who has been deprived of his cigarettes for a while:
He is rude, nervous, quick to anger and incapable of concentration.
He cannot relax until he has had his “fix”.
He is affected by insomnia, indigestion, episodes of acute anxiety and so on…

The effect upon those around him is almost equally unpleasant:They have to bear the disgusting fumes emitted by him;
even a mild rebuke habitually elicits a violent reaction from the smoker,
who is apparently only aware of the violation of what he perceives to be his rights,
i.e. his right to inflict this foul smoke upon any person in any place.

It has been firmly established by scientists, that secondary smoking is at least,
if not more harmful than primary smoking, particularly for children.

Asthma,or allergy sufferers are forced to vacate the vicinity of the smoker.

Allaah’s Messenger ? said: “Anyone who believes in Allaah and the Last Day should not hurt his neighbour.”
(Narrated by Al-Bukhaari)

He(sal)also said: “Verily, the example of a good companion and a bad one is like that of a perfume seller
and a blacksmith: As for the perfume seller,he would either give you (some perfume),
or you would buy (some) from him,or at least, you would get a good smell from him.
And as for the blower of the bellows, you would either get a foul odour from him,or he would burn your clothes.”
(Narrated by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim)

Smoking is also a waste of one’s wealth on things which offer only harm and no benefit,
for Allaah, Most High says:

"And do not waste [your wealth] extravagantly.Indeed the squanderers are brethren to the devils
(Noble Quran-Soorah 17:26-27)

and the Messenger of Allaah(sal) said:
“Allaah hates for you three things: Gossipping, begging and wasting money.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim).

Smoking involves consuming an evil substance.
It has a noxious smell,a horrible taste and is harmful to the body.

Allaah says: He [the Prophet ?] who will enjoin upon them the doing of what is right, forbid them from wrongdoing,
make lawful to them the good things of life, forbid for them the evil things
and lift from them their burdens and the shackles that were [formerly] upon them (Noble Quran-Soorah 7:157)

A smoker is not only a faasid (corrupt person),but also a mufsid (one who spreads corruption):
Because of his bad example, his family members, friends and colleagues may also smoke.

It is useless to say: “Do as I say, and not as I do.”

The problem is exacerbated when the smoker affects an air of religious piety or knowledge,
because many people will take him as a role model. This multiplies his sins and increases his burden.

Genuinely pious people avoid smoking and smokers, thus the smoker is excluded from the company of the righteous.

Smokers find fasting during the month of Ramadhaan more difficult thatn non-smokers,
because they are suffering a form of drug addiction.

They rarely fast voluntary fasts since even the obligatory fast is a trial for them.

The prohibition of smoking applies equally to the user, the seller, the manufacturer,
the advertiser and all those involved in its production, sale or consumption, for Allaah says:

"Coop-erate with one another in righteousness and piety, and do not cooperate with one another
in sinning and transgression. And fear Allaah;verily,Allaah is severe in punishment"
(Noble Quran-Soorah 5:2)

and the Messenger of Allaah said:

“Indeed, when Allaah prohibits something,he prohibits eating its price.”(Narrated by Ahmad)

So dear brothers and sisters,if you are addicted to this foul habit,
you must make your intention firmly to Allaah to stop and seek aid with Him Who hears and sees all,
and always answers the supplication of the sincere Believer.

He, Most High says:
And when My slaves ask you about Me,[oh, Muhammad, say that] verily, I am near [in hearing, seeing and know-ledge]:
I answer the ?supplication of the one who asks when he asks Me
(Noble Quran-Soorah 2:186)
